Indyish seeks International Regional Developers

Our hunt for 4 Community developers is trundling along greatly, and we’ve received some excellent emails about it from all kinds of folks I’m looking forward to meeting. I’m going to hold off on interviews until early next week, so if you’re thinking of putting yourself forward there’s still time.

In response to our call, I had a number of people from outside Montreal contact me to see how and if they could be involved. This is so cool. While I want to make sure we’re connecting with our neighborhoods here in Montreal, I also want to connect with likeminded artists and arts-supporters internationally.

It’s hard to make a living as an independent artist everywhere, and the folks who attempt it are connected to each other by the strength of their desire to spend time bringing something good into the world; by the non-violence of their practice; and by the struggle to make a living and, in many cases, to rationalize the “usefulness” of what they do. We exist to support their independent trajectories and, most importantly, to support that loose-but-crucial connection. So, in response to these offers of help from abroad, we’re now joyfully opening our figurative doors up to Regional Developers.

Regional Developers can help artists in their area get exposure through Indyish; and help Indyish grow so that artists make more sales and we make more ad revenue, becoming increasingly sustainable.

Regional developers will in most cases begin as the lone Indyish outposts in their area. Their jobs will be different in each scenario because of their different interests and skills, but in general, Regional developers will …

write at-least-weekly features for the Indyish blog about the art they encounter in their ‘hood;

use the Team Indyish mailing list to coordinate efforts and generate good ideas;

be leaders for the International aspects of Indyish endeavors;

eventually, build up a local team of community developers to provide focused support for writers, designers, visual artists, musicians in their area.

orchestrate local events, from shows, to contests, to sales.

Our commitment as an Indyish team is:

To support artists.

To support creative independence AND interconnection.

To write about local art scenes and practices.

To contribute to communication and action that is non-violent and community-responsible.

To contribute to the local economy and to local networks.

To promote mutually beneficial solutions and ideas.

To create sustainable relationships with people, organizations and places.
