Pay-what-you-can to support the Indyish
19h00: Film Screening: What is Indie?
At a time when independent artists in the music industry have more power and control over their careers than ever before, What is Indie? explores what it really means to be ‘indie’.
Without any background in film and funded entirely with his credit cards, Montreal director Dave Cool has taken the film from a small do-it-yourself project and turned it into an indie success story, even catching the attention of CNN.com, Newsweek Magazine and Canada’s National Film Board.
20h00: Round Table: Making a Living Indie?
Is it really possible to make a living as an indie artist? In every field this is tough, whether you’re an indie musician or filmmaker or designer or publisher. So let’s have an open conversation about how it works and maybe even how it could be easier.
Rountable with What is Indie? director Dave Cool and editor Tim Rideout; Indyish.com co-founder(s); musicians Amanda Mabro and Andrea Revel; and hopefully = the producers of the Montreal Fringe and POP Montreal…
Invited guests: You!
Let’s swap notes then toasts.
The roundtable will be followed by performances by some of Dave Cool’s favorite local indie musicians:
21h00 Andrea Revel
Often described as a Rogue-folkie for crossing over into the electronic realm, Andrea Revel’s sound is the result of a natural evolution for a musician transplanted from Calgary’s hotbed of folk to the urban soundscapes of Montreal..
22h00 Amanda Mabro
Amanda Mabro’s unique blend of cabaret-jazz, pop, blues and indie-rock fuses the smooth and sultry vocal stylings of jazz legends and the mysterious, theatrical flare of German and French Cabaret.
23h00 WhiteRoom
If Radiohead’s aborted bastard children had survived, been raised on a diet of British Break Beats, early traditional jazz and Chopin etudes you might get something like WhiteRoom
Then dance the summer Sunday night away with…
24h00-2h00: Indyish’s fav DJ – GS BLott
George once again brings his healthy hodge podge of savory aural stimuli for your listening pleasure.
ah yes, except! green room had already gotten like 4 permit violation tickets from noise complaints from the neighbor, and hadn’t yet been able to build the sound baffling (which they finished during sound check for hip hop karaoke the next day. yes. oy.) so we had to keep the volume down (frantically so) and finish the show by 11. We decided to cut the round table and keep the film screening and the performances (of course), and end the night early because the whole thing was so tense. Ah. Had fun with Dave Cool though. That’s a good guy.
