CREATIVE COLLISION: MONTREAL ART COLLECTIVES JOIN FORCES AT THE FRINGE
When Risa Dickens and Elran Oded came up with Indyish back in December of 2005, they “just hoped to create a friendly network for artists that would extend the sense of community we loved here in Montreal to help us create links with other like-minded creative indie folks around the world,” said Dickens. And while they aim high, their approach has been low-key. Indyish describes itself as “a loose affiliation of folks who make stuff,” which concisely describes their approach to life and making art.
Despite its carefree exterior, Indyish has been cultivating a scene in which musicians, illustrators and others can help each other find work, sell their merchandise and just support one another through the ups and downs of independent artmaking. So when it comes to Montreal’s annual Fringe Festival, Indyish has found a nice niche for itself, showcasing local talent that dwells outside of the mainstream. “We’ve been special event producers with the Montreal Fringe since we were first invited to bring our crazy Indyish showcase to the Fringe outdoor stage five years ago,” Dickens said. “It’s one of our favourite shows of the year; everyone is outside in festival mode and the Fringe is like a family.”
At this year’s Fringe Festival, Indyish will collaborate again with another Montreal-based collective, Ukulele Bizarro. Founded by musician Krista Muir in 2009, the group unites various uke fanatics in an effort to promote their favourite four-stringed instrument to the world. Both collectives share a love of the homemade, intimate music shows and creative collaboration. When asked what guests can expect, Dickens replied, “Afternoon sun, cheap beer, spending time with artists of all kinds, beautiful music, stories…” As the evening progresses, the uke presence will give way to folky pop and rock, including Lakes of Canada, Glass Passenger and The Darling DeMaes, and we’ll end the night with an UNPLUGGED COVERSONG SINGALONG led by the UKULELE CLUB DE MONTREAL.
