IndiePendence Blog - Indie Swag (for Americans)

by Risa Dickens

Just discovered an interesting site called IndiePendence that gives away gift packs to viewers made up entirely of indie crafty goodness. You can contribute your wares to get some promotion on the site and get your work into the hands of indie fans, and you can try and win the gift packs, but only in America. On the one hand, I think this is bitchin, but on the other hand I’ve had a few professional artists I know lately complaining that they are getting sick of being approached to do work for free under the umbrella of promotion. Maybe these people have just reached a level beyond needing to promote themselves quite so much (good on them!) or maybe there’s a few too many people out there trying to play on young artsy early eagerness, hoping they’ll be able to spin their yarns into gold. I know I have definitely met a certain breed of hopeful smarm a number of times over the years, the kind of person who spins big dreams for you of what they can do and in the end leaves you sort of broker and feelin empty. I don’t know why art attracts this, but it’s a fact, so watch yourself kids! Make sure you at least get some free beer or a link back for your troubles, arright!? ;)

Anyway, tangents aside, check out the IndiePendence site, seems there’s lots of love and sweet swag in it, and none of the aforementionned smarm:
