As we reported here a while ago, Myspace Music seemed to have decided to deal with majors first, then worry about indies. Now, after a pr backlash, they’ve started to try and make things right.
When MySpace rolled out its new music service last month, some of the most prominent independent record labels withheld their artists because they believed the social network was treating them unfairly. That was a public relations nightmare for MySpace which touts itself a champion of “indie” bands.
On Thursday, however, MySpace unveiled a deal that should begin to quiet the critics. The News Corp. (NWS, Fortune 500) division announced it had licensed over one million tracks from IODA, a San Francisco-based digital distributor of independent music. IODA’s artist roster includes indie faves such as Paw Tracks’s Animal Collective and Kanine Records’ Chairlift.

This doesn’t answer the issue for countless unaffiliated indies, nor does it address the problems many see in the new Myspace Music software for indies, like no longer providing the option of making mp3’s downloadable rather then just streaming, something that’s helped the music circulate and indie fan bases increase…
But anyway, it’s something.
Info on IODA and how you can join is available here.
This is a nice move by myspace; but it continues to follow their stale old act of creating large amounts of revenue on the backs of independent artist and their content.
myspace is easily worth at least a billion, and where is the value coming from other than artist and memberscontent and activities.
How much ad revenue is myspace sharing with members that generate ad revenue for them ? Are they giving anything back to the community that has put them where they are ?
I am technology consultant, and this summer I became so feed up with the share cropper mentality of sites like myspace that I decided to build an application that shares the wealth that is created with the community.
At adelph.us we believe that Artist should have the best tools available to connect with their fans and to distribute and sell their music. We think that artist should have an easy way to build a fan base and to allow their fans to also be rewarded for spreading the word and the music.
With adelph.us the artist owns the content. With adelph.us the artist controls the price. With adelph.us the artist can generate interest as well as sells.
