If you’re in Florida… Lindas Pesadillas… pretty nightmares are the best kind, after all.

Still searching for your Saturday night fix of art? If you happen to be in Florida and can get yourself to Miami’s Wynwood Art District, search no more! Alvaro Pérez del Solar’s new solo exhibit, “Lindas Pesadillas” — or “Pretty Nightmares,” if you’re an unfortunate soul like me who’s missing linguistic aptitude — is landing with a two-day opening this Friday (yesterday) and Saturday (today!) evening.

Del Solar, who hails from Lima, Peru but now calls the fair city of Montreal home, is using his work to explore humanity’s dark side, what it feel like to live in this world and be part of society. If you head to his Web site, you’ll get a taste of what’s to come in Lindas Pesadillas thanks to a picture of uniformly-dressed clowns, superheros, and who-knows-who jumping gleefully into a pit of fire.

All instinctive Johnny Cash singing aside, del Solar’s exhibit should be an interesting one to check out. Yes, he paints, but his creations extend beyond the canvas, as you can read in his artist’s statement:

Alvaro Perez del SolarIn “Lindas Pesadillas” (or “Pretty Nightmares”) Peruvian artist Alvaro Perez del Solar explores the dark side of the human experience with his characteristically surreal sense of humor, creating worlds that are often disturbing — but delightfully so. Body parts are sliced off with childlike abandon, vibrant colors fly in the face of mortality, and terror, never tamed, is unbridled to the point of resembling joy.

In addition to his deliciously vivid paintings, Pérez del Solar has also crafted a collection of cuchimilcos: modern, admittedly creepier versions of the ceramic dolls often found in the tombs of the Chancay people. And the cheap metal serving trays that sometimes turn up as family heirlooms (and end up in the trash because no one knows what to do with them) serve as an unexpected canvas for Perez del Solar’s playful take on the absurdity of our existence. “O death, where is thy sting?” In Perez del Solar’s work, death is far more likely to ask you to dance.

I don’t know about you, but I’d rather dance with Death than go along with a more “traditional” plan of interaction…
