I browse the interweb in search of myself…and find complex geometries

by Tessa Smith

Most of us have googled our own name at least once just to see what came up. But who do we find in the virtual fragments of self and other, networked through space and time? Is the truth in searching not having found?

Well, yesterday I found myself.

Ok actually it’s not very philosophical at all, and I didn’t have to google to find it. I was on the Headquarters Galerie blog reading a post about the lovely fringe-faced Queen Michelle of Kingdom of Style who made her own strap-up gladiator shoes (obviously I was hard at work doing important things). Once on Kingdom of Style, I did a little looking around and found a post from earlier this week about Montreal designer, Complex Geometries’ spring collection. A year ago-ish I posed for some photos for the lookbook for this very collection, so the photos that stared back at me were pretty awkward shots of moi. The other model seems to know what she’s doing and be quite sophisticated etc. But either way, the clothes are beautiful and complex, and definitely worth checking out.

Michelle describes the line as “perfectly simple with a twist” and celebrates their “unfussiness”. And there is a simpleness to Clayton’s work that’s commendable. But for me, the beauty is in the asymmetry and bizarre takes on standard pieces (like t-shirts, shift dresses). Solid colours disguise how much is actually going in his work. I couldn’t actually pin down what I’m wearing in any particular shot; a dress draped around my neck as a shawl with an irregular square held up as a skirt with a swatch of fabric wrapping it to my waist. It’s amazing stuff.

hee, looking at those photos reminds me of a few days ago… i was grabbing some $5 sale stuff at arterie and found a few complexgeometrics pieces… i couldn’t figure them out! i’d come out of the dressing room all “is this how i’m supposed to wear it?” i think they should come with instructions! or funky illustrations of the different ways you can wear them!

  4. Tessa proclaims with a mighty roar:
