How to Save Your Own Skin this Weekend

by Sylvain Verstricht

Sauver sa peau, by Mélanie Demers and Laïla DialloIf you’re looking for something to do this weekend, I’d highly recommend that you check out Mélanie Demers and Laïla Diallo’s Sauver sa peau at Tangente. Anglos, don’t let the French title scare you (its English incarnation is Sense of Self); the only spoken section is in English and then there is a bit of French text at the end. Once again, Demers successfully manages to create not only choreography, but a show where performance, music, and lighting all come together to create a strange, palpable atmosphere. It’s her strength. Out of this atmosphere, the political emerges at the most affective level. This is no small feat, and it allows for a cohesion between the different sections, even as we move from feminism to race issues. Demers has enough confidence to take the time needed to build up just the right atmosphere. Well worth seeing.

Sauver sa peau plays tonight, Saturday, February 2 at 7:30pm and tomorrow, Sunday, February 3 at 4pm. Student tickets are 13$ and regular tickets are 16$. For more information, call 514.525.1500.
