Global Comic Jam, Global Exquisite Corpse

by Risa Dickens

At a Comic Jam artists draw panels or pages to further a story started by another author, and someone else continues them. We play drawing games like this sometimes, and I’m always into learning new ones and finding new people to play with. There’s something interesting in all the different versions… they provoke different sets of imagery, assumption and association. They play with authorial control and expectation. And they’re good fun.

indyish exquisite corpseUsually we’ll play a round of Exquisite Corpse to get warmed up, which is like a blind Comic Jam. And we’ve played a version that’s more like catch with other Internet players on kollabor8. Sometimes we attempt to add editorial direction with a set of rules we developed called “Our House vs Your House“.

But these 2 sites are different. Both involve a bunch of artists playing together online - page by page- from around the world.

  • At Global Comic Game, they layer their jams, so writers can play too: http://www.globalcomicjam.com/
  • And at An Exquisite Corpse they “create a unified work of art encompassing the sensibilities and styles of four distinct individuals”: www.anexquisitecorpse.net
  • And both are open to applications from new players. yay!
