Free Video Editing Software

by Risa Dickens

In my ongoing mission to support of all those brave makers who are preparing to attempt the 24hr Music Video Making, I’d like to point y’all toward a few free video editing softwares which are available online.

In this article on the best free video editing software from About.com, the reviewer Carl Plummer covers the basics and the titles for each software he reviews links to where you’ll be able to download copies via Microsoft or Apple or what have you. So much better (maybe) then torrenting ripped versions of final cut.

Also better then that (probably), is Blender, an open source video editing and more software that is supposedly kind of intense but really good. There’s a new release available as of yesterday, apparently in celebration of my birthday, and you can read a bit about it and find links to download it in this article from the Blendernation blog.

for online video sources, ie. places to find footage that you can legally edit into a music video, check out the open source movies on archive.org. i wrote a post about this a few days ago, with some notes on what to look for, which is here. And if you want to listen to the songs of Telefauna, Shoot the Moon and Sara Johnston before being challenged to make one of their videos, I posted links to where there songs are online in this post here.
