Fashionably late arrival?

by mitz

So when is a good time to show up fashionably late?

If there is a party, let’s say posted on facebook event and it says it starts at 9PM, most of people never show up right on 9PM or before that. Most likely people don’t wanna be the first keeners who look like too excited about the event (of course unless it is your favorite band, Eve6 or whateva). You wanna be like someone who is so cool and invited to too many party and had to attend dinner party or whateva. You don’t wanna stand around like a lonely donkey in a desert. They think that the best time is to show when the event is warmed up enough with a good amount of people in the room and as you enter the room, your friends are a little intoxicated and give you hi-five and/or ass-slap as if you hit a grand slam on game 7.

But also, you don’t wanna show up too late. You don’t wanna come across, “dude, you missed the keg stand!” or “oh were you here when Jonas showed up?” So really, this is much more annoying and complex matter than Future Shop Customer Service.

From my experience, 11PM is the way to go if the event announced to start at 9PM. No wait, actually a lot of people think 11PM is the time to show up so I would say 11:15PM is the best time for fashionably late arrival. so the formula is usually:

(the announced start time) + 2.25hours

This formula is mostly for parties and shows you really don’t care about, mind you.

Do not do fashionably late arrival at the following events:

Funerals, weddings, flights, movie/theatre, dates, Much Music Electric Circus etc etc.

what is everyone doing during these 2.25 hours? (blogging?)

nice to have you on the site mitz!

i find when i actually leave the house these days it’s usually with a strict purpose and so i’ll show up on time (which is late anyway in Montreal) to see a friend play and then go home. time management is a constant battle for me, more on that from risa.

i am also “naturally” late for everything all the time always, so i just aim for on time and usually end up being greeted with, “dude you missed the keg stand!” which leads me to question why i came out.

YES! Mitz in the house! you especially have to be careful with today’s time change though, because if you arrive 3,25 hours late, you’ll most likely miss both the keg stand, Jonas, and Jonas falling over from too much beer, which, lets face it, you really might as well stay home by that point.

you also shouldnt be late to clothing swap if you want good finds! or fashion shows actually, because those are usually on schedule.

    haha thanx for invite Tessa!

for 2.25 hours, I think people often spend time calling friends to find out what time they are going and checking facebook event sections who is attending. ya I seem to show up on time at shows lately, like that TIMES NEW VIKING secret show, it says, “starts 7PM sharp!” so we showed up 7PM but the first opening band didn’t show up til 8 or so.

so maybe in terms of their show, the formula would be,

(scheduled time) + number of opening bands x Times New Viking(how tired they are)

    i like pans…

anyways, thanx for invite for here, Tessa and Marilis!

“Better an hour too soon than a minute too late” my grandfather always said!

  6. Risa Dickens proclaims with a mighty roar:

Yes! My grandfather was totally of that camp and trained me to leave hours early for everything in case you ended up having to walk there in a blizzard.

Funny … as a band member who writes posters and blogs and whatever, I’ve started using the reverse equation to get people there for when we’re playing… in other words

time you step on stage - 15 minutes for line check and impressive looking button pushing on samplers and computers - 2 hours = time announced on poster/blog.

I’ve started doing this because my band often opens for other bands, and people who came out to hear my band end up missing me and hearing the headliners. Not that I don’t want them to hear the headliners… but it would be nice if they heard me too.

The problem is, this could spiral out of control if the fashionably late crowd finds out about what I’m doing here (and I know other people do it as well). Imagine if you placed my equation into the previous one, things could go one of two ways… All the people who wanted to be fashionably late would either be on time (perish the thought) or 5 hours late.

Uh oh - I was supposed to meet my mom for lunch 15 minutes ago… gotta run.

As someone who is fashionably late fairly often and usually for fashion-related reasons, this is waaaaay too much math for me so I think I’m just going to arrive on time from now on…

  9. mitz proclaims with a mighty roar:

ya totally. my grandparents said same things too. their wisdom!

and we all know that fashion and trend changes in time.

so does that mean, back in 1962, was it “fashionably on time arrival”?

or in 1984, was it “fashionably early arrival”?

so im gonna keep showing up two hours before and if people ask me, “why so early?” I will reply, “im really cutting edge and fashionable.”
