OUR SEGMENTS!
KIDS POP
This year, Kids POP is one big free show called the Purple Dance Party, and it’s being hosted by the delightful Montreal performer Dishwasher (Martin Cesar from Think About Life), and features a magic show by Socalled and performances by numero#, and P-Star, a 13 year-old rapper. There are dj’s playing as well (DL Jones and DJ SHAYDAkiss), a chance for kids to bring in their instruments and jam, and a live karaoke band to let their inner-idols come out.
PUCES POP
Puces POP is Montreal’s largest do-it-yourself festival aiming at promoting and celebrating independent creation. Proudly launching in its fifth year, Puces POP holds a marketplace over the weekend of the festival where over one hundred local and international artists, crafters and indie record labels come to sell their wares. In addition, Puces POP hosts several other events such as an emerging designer fashion show, kids’ workshops and a record sale and gear swap.
ART POP
Art POP 2009 features an amazing roster of emerging and established artists sure to engage and entice POP Montréal festival-goers. We’re offering up to the public some of the most cutting-edge, fun and vibrant art from this city and beyond. We have two main venues — Notman House and Espace Reunion — and nine additional special projects and co-productions throughout the city. With such a flurry of awesome art activites, Art POP is sure to be the aesthetic heart, bone (oh my!) and soul of this year’s POP Montreal.
SYMPOSIUM
Play music with FAUST. Build your own theremin. A robot procession straight out of SFMOMA. The Symposium is a noisy, open-hearted music conference where academic panels will take place alongside DIY business & electronics workshops, art installations, and keynotes by legendary music icons in a comfortable and uniquely inspiring environment. Interviews with Buffy Sainte-Marie, rap pioneer Dr. Roxanne Shante, and an intimate workshop with Bob Johnson (producer Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen) and Howard Bilerman at Hotel2Tango (Arcade Fire, Godspeed) … DJed lecture on ethno-musicology with dj /rupture .. are just a few of the unforgettable inspiring offerings this year. Don’t miss out.
FILM POP
At Cinéma du Parc this year, Film Pop is proud to present It Might Get Loud featuring Jack White, Jimmy Page, and The Edge and returning director Gabriel Noble’s P-Star Rising, which chronicles the struggles and triumphs of pre-teen rap sensation P-Stard and her family as they try to make it in the rap world. La Place Ubisoft: Espace Réunion will host Film Pop’s special events, workshops, and short films including the third edition of ‘Making Music with the NFB’, the return of La Blogothèque’s Vincent Moon who will present a selection of Takeaway Shows and unreleased material, and Sufjan Stevens’ 8mm homage to the Brooklyn Queens Expressway, ‘The BQE.’
