Tribute to Brian Wilson, Daniel Johnston, Rocky Ericson, Syd Barrett, Laura Nyro, and Billie Holiday

Time: Sunday, March 21 – Doors at 8.30 PM
Place: Le Cagibi, 5490 boulevard Saint-Laurent – Montréal
$5.00 All proceeds will be donated to the Mile End Mission

WITH PERFORMANCES BY: Allan Lento, Yan Basque, Sébastian Hell, Rick Coluccio, James Irwin, Shaun Mason, Will Austin, Papercrows, Window, Luca Fantigrossi

Description (by Sebastian Hell)
Although it has taken on negative connotations of pretentiousness and full-of-crappery of late, especially in Montreal, being an Artist with particular sensibilities is something some can’t help but feel and become.

Daniel Johnston, for example, in his song ”Story Of An Artist”, sums it up pretty well: Artists are people who see beauty in what the rest of us are jaded of, like lying in a field, surrounded by flowers; on the other hand, they often take Life’s Turmoils harder than most of us, too.

And to cope, some resort to drugs (legal or not), mental hospitals, or seclusion.

They can’t help but create, and in their creations, they can’t help but share their world views – in the manner that they, themselves see it.

This is what we’re paying tribute to this time around: folks who see this world as something else than boring 9-to-5 call center jobs, all-out consummerism, saving to buy a car, paying $15 to go see Avatar.

There are other pleasures in this world, and it takes those who have stepped out from being pretty much mindless zombies to show us the path.

All of our performers will pay a heart-felt tribute to the geniuses who have dared to create their own paths, for better or (more often) worse. Brian Wilson, Daniel Johnston, Rocky Ericson, Syd Barrett, Laura Nyro, Billie Holiday, Karl Stephenson – all people who have shaped music as we know it by straying far enough from what was already being done just because it’s the only way they thought how to.

Just because.

————————

AVEC DES PRESTATIONS DE: Allan Lento, Yan Basque, Sébastian Hell, Rick Coluccio, James Irwin, Shaun Mason, Will Austin, Papercrows, Window, Luca Fantigrossi

THE YOUJSH (http://www.myspace.com/theyoujsh)

“The Youjsh get the best of every type of music that I can think of, save maybe thrash metal or something.” – Merrill Garbus [Tune-Yards]

“Using the sounds and aesthetic of eastern European klezmer music as a starting point, Sailor’s colourful and extensive musical background truly lends the Youjsh’s sound to something quite extraordinary.” -The McGill Daily

THE BELLE GAME (http://www.myspace.com/thebellegame)

“Inventing Letters is a hot cup of tea, twinkle lights, a bear hug, fresh baked bread and snow falling when the sun is out.” -Venus Toshiba (The Aural Kinetic)

TIM BEELER of The Crown Vandals (http://www.myspace.com/thecrownvandals)

“Take a pinch of Neutral Milk Hotel’s bracing songcraft, add hefty helpings of sonic whitewash à la Sigur Ros, pepper that with a sprinkling of Polyphonic Spree-esque irreverence, and you have something roughly approximating The Crown Vandals. The freakier-than-thou duo has generated a healthy amount of buzz in its adopted hometown of Montréal, eliciting comparisons to each of the three aforementioned acts as well as freak-folk’s reigning weirdo Devendra Banhart.” -Seven Day Vermont

“These guys deliever… Guenevere even sounds like it wouldn’t be out of place on The Aeroplane Over The Sea… Its a bit lazy to call this folk, it feels more than that, this almost sounds like what I wanted Arcade Fire to sound like…” -These Archives Are Monuments

Her life experiences give her the unique ability to infuse lyrics with highly charged emotions. Backed by veteran musicians: Dan Legault (Drums), Jeff Monaco (Bass), George Papafilys (Guitar) & Tim Alleyne (Keyboard), Carolyn Fe will open up the evening and warm you up. Carolyn’s EP, entitled, “100%” is available on CD
his title of Guitar Hero through media and fans alike. Montreal’s
CHOM-FM “Black Cat Alley’s” host Randy Renaud called Rowe a
“head-down, have-guitar-will-travel professional who derives his greatest
satisfaction from songs and notes perfectly delivered”. He was right. In
Rowe’s style, every note is deliberate and each tone carries meaning.
Rowe’s approach to blues comes from 50s Chicago and 60s British blues,
largely self-taught, with influences from Michael Bloomfield, all the Kings
(Freddie, Albert, and B.B.), Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton. With the release of
his fifth album, FIVE, he has once again received international acclaim. Rowe
charted in the top 25 on Living Blues and Maple Blue Magazine with his five CDs
and garnered 15 nominations and wins from the prestigious LYS BLUES AWARDS.
Rowe brings a level of artistry and tradition that only comes after years of
“La vie en blues” as seen and heard at The Montreal International
Jazz Festival, countless Blues Festivals, and as an opener for top acts such as
Bryan Lee, Colin James and Smokey Wilson. Rowe’s live performances
have been broadcast nationwide by both Rogers and Bravo Television and has

even been acknowledged by ITunes in their list of Canadian Guitar Heros. Steve
Rowe has recently joined with Paul Grondin on bass and Paul-André Lamarche on
drums to form the Power Blues Trio. Sounding better then ever, this rhythm
section is pushing Steve to places yet to be discovered in blues.

and The Blues Electric: From Chicago to Asia,
guitarist James Green has hypnotized audiences. A Montreal native, he’s a
veteran of the local and international music scene with performances at the
Montréal Jazz Fest and various Blues festivals. James was lead guitarist for
cult-phenom band The Blushing Brides which toured across North America in the
early 1980’s. Shortly after their first hit single entitled “What
You Talkin’ About”, he joined forces with
David Bowie’s legendary guitarist Mick Ronson
to form Perfect Affair and recorded his second album. It was after his third
album entitled, World Beat, with Reggae band DUB U-5 that James discovered his
real passion – The Blues. He joined Smokestack Lightning and 1993 he formed the
band, Killing Floor Blues. James continues to appear as a guest with the
Blushing Brides and performs with artists and various projects such as: James
Cotton, Edgar Winter, the Dixon Brothers, Big Jack Johnson, Russell Jackson,
Frank Marino, Cliff Stevens’ band Slowhand and
on Slim Williams’ album Pulse of The Planet. James Green and The Blues
Electric came to life in 2004 playing at venues throughout the city where he
combines traditional style Blues with Rock & Roll, R & B, soul and funk
into his electric Blues renditions. His music touches the soul of audiences
everywhere.

Artist Biography:

Boats play music songs in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada with lyrics about dismemberment (the good kind), excellent posture, and orthodontic surgery. A junky indie-pop band with high-end hopes but low-end equipment (total net worth of keyboard section: $40, all thrift store finds), Mat Klachefsky’s bizarre vocal chords mixed with his “infectiously catchy” pop songs and boundless energy have been freaking out audiences ever since they released their critically acclaimed first album “Intercontinental Champion” to local audiences in October 2007. Since then they have embarked on four Canadian tours, played a packed houses at SXSW, NXNE, Pop Montreal, WCMA’s and Sled Island, and charted solidly all across Canada.

Boats just finished recording their 2nd full-length album “Cannonballs, Cannonballs.” which will be released in May. The album will take you to their lively and bizarre world where kids protect their summer camp from a fake moustache tree, TV shows are broadcast on the sides of buildings, and Olympic ski jumpers dot the horizon. While some of the new songs will stick to a binding theme, others are tied together by pure, wonderful, nonsense. Boats is excited to take the rest of the universe to their world again.

Over the years there has been a rotating cast of Winnipeg musicians who have played in Boats, but the current version has a pack of Winnipeg all-stars surrounding singer-songwriter Mat Klachefsky. These can include, but are not limited to, members of The Western States, The Paperbacks, Half Court Prayer, The Details, The Paperbacks, Oldfolks Home, and Transistor Sound & Lighting Co.

The MEG Montreal festival can now be found on your cultural calendar all year long.

The MEG Scouting Showcases are a new series of audition evenings, organized once a month at Divan Orange. At each event, three bands will get the chance to promote themselves in front of an audience and compete for an opportunity to get a spotlight on a MEG Showcase that will take place during the 12th edition of the MEG Montreal festival from July 29th to August 1st, 2010.

Being part of a MEG Showcase means an opportunity to play for tons of music industry professionals from all around the world. It’s also a great way to get the attention of Montreal media and Canada’s music industry.

The next MEG Scouting Showcase will take place on Friday, February 26th, where you’ll see Organ Mood, Vicious/Delicious and Shortpants Romance. All these shows are Pay What You Can. One other Scouting Showcase will take place on March 26th. If you’d like to participate, we are still looking for bands for those nights.

Send your requests to: showcase@megmontreal.com
