Have you upgraded your cell phone recently? Do you have the latest Blackberry or…
Wait. I don’t actually know much about cell phones. I have one, and use it throughout the day, but only for calling people and checking my voice mail. I don’t text message. I don’t browse the Internet and I don’t check my email. I’m old-fashioned that way, I guess, and the only reason I have a cell phone is because at my apartment before this one, I decided it made no sense to have both a landline and a cell phone, and since I was rarely home I picked the travelling option.
Luddite tangent aside, if YOU are less afraid of technology than I, you must have at least one old cell phone kicking around in a pile or dust or drawer of other forgotten tech-toys. And if you are like me, you’ve wondered what to do with old electronics. Sure, a big black garbage back is easy, but is it the best solution?
The environment cries a resounding NO, and Montreal-based designer vegan leather company Matt & Nat completely agrees. Next Wednesday, 30 April, they’ll be hosting a sidewalk sale-esque cell phone recycling bash outside Sun Youth on St-Urbain.
Matt & Nat has teamed up with a company to recycle these phones and benefit Sun Youth at the same time, thanks to corporate per-phone pledges. This will be a day where everybody wins!
Here’s what they say:
MATT & NAT has partnered up with the Montreal company, 1 Optimum, who has been spearheading a month long cell phone recycling campaign to benefit Sun Youth. Through corporate pledges, for every cell phone donated, $4 willbe donated to Sun Youth. The final goal is to raise $10,000–that’s only 2500 cell phones!
We couldn’t pass up on the chance to participate in this, but wanted to do more than collect phones around the office. So, we’re reaching out to all of you, our loyal customers. You have been so amazing and generous supporting us at The Old Brewery Mission that we know that you’ll all come out to support us again on Wednesday April 30th from 3:00 to 7:00 PM, where we will be outside of Sun Youth collecting cell phones, chargers, batteries, anything you’ll give us!
And, of course, we will be giving out a MATT & NAT gift as thanks to you.
In case you didn’t catch that last bit, let me remind you: you will get a lovely free gift, all for recycling an old cell phone! You’ll be doing something good for the planet and receiving a bonus for the minimal effort of getting your butt to Sun Youth.
