Drawn and Quarterly store launch with Pascal Blanchet

by Tessa Smith

I feel like every night for the last 2 weeks I’ve had an occasion to drink. And I’m the type to take the world up on its occasions. So needless to say, I’ve been on a bender. It all started a little before Friday, October 19th (the days are hazy), but I know the date of Friday because that happened to be the opening of Montreal’s Drawn and Quarterly storefront.

Since 1989, Drawn and Quarterly has been publishing comics and graphic novels, including work by Julie Doucet, Chester Brown, Joe Sacco, Yoshihiro Tatsumi, Seth, and Robert Crumb. For an (illustrated, naturally) list of current artists, check the Drawn and Quarterly roster

Sasha Jackson of the Mirror wrote a nice piece that week on owner, Chris Oliveros, and the new Drawn and Quarterly space, which is located at 221 Bernard O.

The store, like its books, is beautiful. The walls are exposed brick with pastel paint and wooden tables display the coveted wares. If you’re new to D+Q, a good place to start is to pick up one of their anthologies, which showcase new and emerging graphic work. Another good way to get hooked is to stop by the store and spend an hour looking around at all the goodies. At the launch I noticed a bunch of books from Conundrum Press, which are also worth checking out.

Friday’s opening was marked by the launch of Pascal Blanchet’s White Rapids, a fifties modernist style graphic novel about a logger’s settlement in northern Quebec with a really fascinating history.

Drawn and Quarterly plan to host workshops as well as book launches, so watch their site for upcoming events.

For photos of the party, check out Peggy Burns’ flickr page. Julie Doucet was there! And Marc Bell!

  1. Tessa proclaims with a mighty roar:

My friend John got me White Rapids for the holidays, and it’s beautiful! In fact, I must have had my back turned at the launch when he bought it and got it signed by Blanchet. And by signed, I mean decorated the last page with an illustration of my name. I read it on my way from Montreal to Halifax and the whole way people kept glancing over my shoulder to try to see what I was looking at.

Also, I got #21 of the McSweeney’s Quarterly from a friend who had done his gift shopping at Drawn and Quarterly. So good!

My friends have been rocking the gift. I suggest stepping into D+Q or ordering something online if you wanna nail gift-giving right down.
