what’s dorkbot-mtl?
Around the globe there is a movement of small, autonomous gatherings with a
similar goal: offering a platform to artists, designers, scientists, nerds,
students and others who let themselves be inspired by technology. this
movement is called dorkbot. And MTL stands for Montreal.

Everyone is welcome to attend. Curiosity is the only pre-requisite.
Dorkbot-MTL is a FREE event.

Inter_cept (or My Idea of Fun)
Project by Lucie Bélanger, Philip Viel & Elie Zananiri

“Intr_cept (or My Idea of Fun)” is a responsive environment where the
participant can play ball with a virtual being. While the ball is being
thrown towards the wall, its position is determined in real-time and the
character moves according to that position. When the ball hits the wall, the
projection gives the impression that the virtual being hits it back. The
installation brings the participant to instantiate a physical dialog with a
virtual being.

Circuit Bending for Dummies

What is Circuit Bending?
The term circuit bending refers to the act of modifying the circuitry of
battery-powered children’s toys to create strange, new, and unintended
sounds for creative purposes. This re-appropriation of objects of a digital
childhood is quickly growing in popularity as it offers an affordable,
culturally referenced path into the creation of electronic music. Instead of
merely watching a person’s face glowing in the screen of a laptop, the
audience can watch performers wrangle squelches, bleeps, groans, and blips
out of everyday childhood toys. This is fun to watch, and fun to do.

Jessica will demonstrate and discuss some of her recent robots and robots
in progress.

Secret Life of Machines by Tim Hunkin
Screening presented by Peter Flemming

Peter Flemming will present an episode of this very DORK-bot relevant late
80’s BBC television series. In it, Tim Hunkin literally deconstructs and
explains the workings and history of various machines such as The Radio, The
Electric Light Bulb, The Telephone. All done in a wonderfully quirky, low
tech charming way. This week’s episode a surprise, but they are all very,
very good.
