Don’t bomb here: Green Space and a Song for Peace

by Risa Dickens

Remember I mentioned the public art garden making going down last weekend here in Mile End, Montreal, to symbolically claim a neighborhood field? Well here are photos of the gesture, looking lovely against the first snow, and notes on the progress of the project. I’ve also attached a recording by a local peace loving band, called Lake of Stew. I could be wrong, but I suspect members of Lake of Stew got involved in the garden project initiated by Emily Rose. Anyway. Their song is about Talking rather then Cocking our guns, comes from the same community, and seems to suit the mood of greening and singing, not bombs… Hopefully, even if you’re nowhere near here, you can take courage from these happy songs and hopeful efforts toward sustainability and peace.

Amen to that, says I.

don’t bomb hereplease continue to not bomb here

Greetings,

I’m writing you because you have either participated in the large scale garden project or have an expressed interest in it…

The work is done! If you want to check it out in person, please do:
directions to Roerich symbol in wild field:
The field is through the chain link fence by the corner of St-Viateur and De Gaspe in the Mile End.

1. In regards to what is really happening to this field in the spring, the plans are not entirely clear.

A rep. at Helen Fotopulos’ office located the site on a map for me and didn’t think it would be a parking lot, rather an extension of rue St-Viateur.
I’ll be getting the ‘# du cadastre’ this afternoon which will tell me who owns it and what zoning it falls under.

2. There are ‘Conseils de Villes’ meetings regarding the Plateau on the first Monday of every month and next Monday is open to the public to address questions or concerns the community has. It is being held at the Maison de la Culture, 465 ave. Mont-Royal at 7pm. Monday December 3rd. All are welcome.

Please keep the dialogue open around this issue, I’m curious about what you think about all of this or info you are privy to…
If anyone has any media leads for me I’m trying to get a little press release together to draw attention to the site, the significance of the symbol, and the development plans. By the end of the week I’ll have a text document and image to forward to folks who want to spread it around.

Once I know who owns the land I’ll find out what’s really going on and get back to those interested in pursuing a petition?

ok,
Bye for now
and THANK YOU so much to those who came out last Friday and Saturday.
You warmed me so, more than the fire and spicy curry.

Emily
