Hey, check out our friends from Diary of a Lost Circus in this here video on Canoe. The chatting is in French, but burlesque is a universal language.
I met Dom, Diary maestro (and Indyish member though he’s yet to fill out his profile, nudge nudge nudge) when working on the Montreal Fringe Festival. While we at Indyish were coordinating graffiti on cars and other, ohh so much other hoohaw of goodness, Dom was producing an epic Fringe Parade and Diary show for the opening night. We got on like wild fire, he and I, and have continued to scheme and giggle ever since. He’s one of the most helpful, genuine event producers I’ve had the pleasure of working with: he gave me heaps and loads of technical and interpersonal advice on how to do a show with lots of acts and has stayed supportive and excited as our MOnthlyMess show has developed. Where other people might have gotten, well, closed-source and concerned about us posing competition, he believes it’s a more-the-merrier type thing and has never made me feel like I’m stepping on toes – quite the opposite, he encourages more stages and producers for the arts, more forums always for the indie interconnection. In return, we try to coordinate our show dates for cross-promotion, and continue to develop our own unique vibe in contrast to the Diary of a Lost Circus show’s general focus on exploring – actually: fricken celebrating – sexuality.
And here’s a fun fact for you: Turns out Dom was, back in the day, also the man behind the first show I ever went to in a bar. Montrealers will remember the kickass ska and punk venue Jailhouse that used to sit right on Mount Royal between Parc and St.Laurent – I remember going there to see Franco in Gangster Politics when I was, well, too young to be there. What I didn’t know was that Dom kept the place open and live acts coming all throughout the economic fallout of the Quebec referendum by paying out of his own pocket and housing touring acts on his couch and floor. The dude does this whole rock n’ roll thing like it’s a politics and a love story and I can’t tell you how much I respect that.
Suffice to say, in the future I think we’ll work more together, and I’m stoked to see there work celebrated in this video clip. And well, I’ll tells ya, we’ve been scheming a bit about what I might do in his show, since he so generously stripped for ours back in October…
The next Diary show is December 21 at Theatre St Catherine. Check it out!
‘Twas nights before Christmas…and all through the Theatre, all the creatures were stirring and even the house.
Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens…
Warm whiskey kisses and pasties on vixens…
Red velvet sirens tied up with lace…
These are a few of my favourite things.
Boys in white leather with blue fake eyelashes…
Girls with rollerskates and short little sashes…
Big bands that play to a beat all their own…
These are a few of my favourite things.
When the girls fight,
When the boys cry,
When I’m feeling sad…
I simply remember my favourite things
And then I don’t feel so bad.
Welcome to Diary of a Lost Circus: A Christmas Pagent.
