Invitation to Participate:
24hr Consistent Variable Project (a design experiment for all ages.)
What could you make in 24 hours?
What would 50 different people make with the same materials?
On August 5th, come find out as Indyish.com launches (as part of our Indyish Arts Weekend) the first ever 24hr Consistent Variable Project.
CVP participants will see the material they’ll be working with for the first time at 12:30pm on Saturday August 5th. The rules are simple: everything you’re given in the kit must be represented in your final project. You can use your own tools, but nothing from outside the kit can remain in the final product.
The hardest part might be coming up with a cool idea, so we’ll have a team of professional designers on hand for fun consultation. Jen Gilpin, of the Fibonacci based Re-Gen line. Himo Martin, of the Pearls Before Swine art-jewellery collections, and Clayton Evans, complexgeometries, who started the CVP’s with Sarah Collins in 2004.
During the hour of designer consultation, we’ll be showing a slideshow of past CVP’s, taken from the pages of the Consistent Variable Project Workbook, written by Indyish co-founder Risa Dickens (with a large team of contributors) in Spring of 2006.
Projects must be returned to the site between 12:00pm-12:30pm Sunday Aug. 6th. The return will be followed by a show and tell and photo session where each return project will be photographed with the artists for a future version of the always-evolving CVP Workbook. We want to have photos of the projects no matter what stage of finished they’re in. It’s possible that some won’t finish. It’s also possible that someone who’s never made anything before will make the coolest thing.
We’re hoping young people will get involved in this CVP, so if you know a kid who’d like to attempt a day of design, please, bring them along! Note: this is not an event at which to leave kids unattended. You come pick up your kit, consult for an hour if you wish, then head home or to the studio to get to work. The next day, time will be dedicated to appreciating the projects as they are photographed on stage.
* You can sign up as an individual or as a collective or team.
Admission covers the cost of the kits
Participation is limited to: 50kits.
So book yer spot early!
Hey, I am a textile artist and i’m very interested by this event, but i want to know where to go?
Thank for the information

Hi Alicia, I wish I’d seen this before we headed over to the Main Hall yesterday. We’ll be there again today- 5390 St.Laurent, south of St.Viateur from 12-4pm- and there are CVP kits left! So anyone who would like to continue the project with us can get one, make something with it at home, and we’ll feature it on the website, and include it in evolving versions of the CVP Workbook.
Hopefully we’ll see you there, or at the Sara Johnston and Shoot the Moon show tonight (also at the Main Hall) or at some future event. This is our first one, so they’ll keep getting better, that’s the plan anyway! (all the info was on the main Indyish Arts Weekend page, but it should have been repeated here as well- sorry!)
Anyway, thanks a lot for your interest in the project, Alicia.
keep well!
Risa

Seems like a fun idea! but I missed the boat, as it is now august 15th, kinda late…so my question is, when’s the next one?
»Also, to all the informed folks out there, do you know of any similar activity involving theater/performance/movie (like a 24h improv movie or play based on a similar theme for everyone?)
thanks for sharing

hey karine! next one.. coming soon.. watch the blog. i can’t wait!
i’ve done a play in a day before, via the Fringe fest. i don’t know if they still do it but it was crazy fun. other then that, there’s the 4880. i’ve heard that’s pretty awesome. and the Actor’s Studio does a 48hr film fest too. tons of time restraint creative action yo! but of course… ours are the best. obviously. =)
