Coming Soon: A review of Jill Murray’s “Break On Through”, care of Alanah

Cover art by graphic artist SiloetteIt’s true. Alanah stole my copy of Break On Through and is enjoying it thoroughly.

I’ve been waiting eagerly to get my hands on Jill Murray’s young adult b-girl novel. I finally got my very own copy this week only to have it snagged. As Alanah pointed out I was reading three other books already (including her copy of Speaker Of The Dead) so it was only right she read it and I could start once she gets dooooone with it.

But I wanted to blog my excitement over my friend Jill’s book. I mean, hells, how many of my other friends have published their very own novel? Right! Can I help being enthusiastic? What justification do I have to encourage you to get your own if I haven’t even read it yet?

Well, I just KNOW it’s good. I can see it in Alanah’s eyes when I sneak a peek at her reading MY copy. And she’s said it’s amazing so far… but won’t go into detail for fear she might ruin it all for me. And I could swear I heard her crying at one point.

Here’s the synopsis gleamed (read “copied”) off the back cover:
“Just when Nadine “Lady Six Sky” Durant’s crew finally has a shot at the Hogtown Showdown, the T-Dot’s biggest b-boy battle, her parents drop the bomb: they’re moving from Parkdale, downtown, to cheesy Rivercrest, a million miles away in the middle of nowhere.

Is this a conspiracy to keep her from breakdancing? Are they trying to force a break up with her boyfriend, Ruckus? And how’s she going to get respect in Rivercrest, when everywhere she turns another hater is waiting to smack her down?

But b-girling is hers and nothing is going to stop Nadine from dancing.”

Now I know you can’t judge a book by its cover, but check out the artwork! L.A.-based graphic artist Siloette utters vibrance and excitement in her work the likes I haven’t seen. If wishes were snowflakes, I’d want her to cover our neighbourhoods in her craft…

And the book bears it’s own soundtrack care of Jill’s partner in crime More or Les. It features an all Canadian hip-hop cast including the likes of Ghislain Poirier, Jesse Dangerously, SJ the Wordburglar, Eternia and more…

Well, nuff said. I’m going to go stare Alanah down until she’s done.

Stop thief!
Facts needed to better understand this post;
-Alanah and Tristan are room mates.
-Jill and Tristan went to High School together.
-Tristan’s b-boy name in High school was Pickles. ;)

  1. AL proclaims with a mighty roar:

    I too cannot wait to read this book. I flipped through it a little, and the sentences I read made me want to read it all. I so shotgun your copy when you and Alanah are both done with it!

    Also, I’d like to make a fun point : the contrast between b-girl novel with a title aptly named, but also reflective of a figure of speech widely popularized by Jim Morrison. Fun fact.
