Arctic Monkeys are playing right now, which… they shouldn’t be but hey, who are festival organizers to tell these British teens to get off the stage so that they can stick to the schedule? Macy Gray can wait. And she will.
So I went directly from blogging to meeting up with Lise and then headed over to see Dragonette at the scène des arbres. That stage is set up in a really strange way. It’s got a great tent over it which provides pretty much the best sound on the whole site but there is a platform directly in the front of the stage where a limited amount of people can stand and that way, they shut the view for anyone else standing behind. I managed to sneak in front of all of them and sit on the steps to the platform and enjoyed the robot-like dance moves of the singer of Dragonette who was wearing an awesome pair of tuxedo shoes. Not that that really matters, but I wrote it down in my notes, so I thought I’d share. The best part was, when at some point, she goes ”Jesus don’t love me anymore, drug, sex and rock and roll” and did the jazz hands. She reminded me a bit of a brown-haired Emily Haines but a bit more cheesy. Ok, really cheesy, but in an awesome kind of way. Check them out, you’ll see what I mean. At one point, there was terrible terrible feedback and she just cringed and giggled and it pretty much echoed in my ears for the rest of their set. Oh well, it happens. Often actually… I usually find it a bit awkward when the singer in a band doesn’t play any instruments but the charm and charisma of Martina makes you totally comfortable.
Oh boy, people are cheering right now. My best guess is that Ms. (or Mrs.) Gray just took the stage. Oh yes, that’s what’s going down! Hand clapping, feet tapping and head shaking action going on right now.
Then, I met up with a friend and we listened to the Brand New Heavies from the side. They covered Crazy in Love by Beyoncé and the White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army which was puh-retty sweet! Then, we hung around for We Are Scientist and managed to stand behind 2 overexcited teenage girls who elbowed me in the face a few times and chanted like I hadn’t heard chanting before. Earlier this morning, I was walking behind this grey-haired man with an artist pass sticking out of his back pocket who I mistook for one of the twins of Blonde Redhead, but as it turns out, it was the guitar player of We Are Scientist. I must say, he has a very well-groomed fringe. They started off with two classic (at least, that’s what I gathered from the chanting young ladies, as they fell silent for the following songs) and then went on to play a new song, followed by another new song, followed by another new song. I made myself start to develop a crush on the keyboardist who looked so out of his element yet really into it and it was awesome. He reminded me a of blond Richard Perry (from Arcade Fire). They ended their set with the song ”The Great Escape”, a pretty intense contrast with Patrick Watson who I believe ended his set with a song of the same title.
I then headed over to the MEG stage for Pas Chic Chic and waited for them to start when I ran into a friend of mine who told me the drummer used to be her high school teacher. That ended up ruining it for me and I started day dreaming and imagining them all as teacher. The bassist looked like he could have been a cool and hip science teacher, the lady of the band, on the keyboard, looked like she could be a french teacher, the kind that brings candy on Halloween, and the drummer, I think I remember my friend saying he taught math, but I might be wrong, the guitarist looked like the cooky and weird arts or music teacher and the lead male and keyboardist would be the principal. And the band? Yeah, they were pretty good.
Au Revoir Simone brought their feminine voices and willowy hair over to the stage and after Feist painted the sky pink yesterday, they brought the sun out from the clouds behind which it had been hiding these past few hours. For the first song, Voxtrot came out to lend some vocals and percussion help. My roomate has seen them both a while back when they had toured together. They then played ”Sad Song” with smiles on their faces and the song ended when one of the girls got on her tip toes and gave a little hit of the tambourine. Although their music is not what I’d call ”party music”, the girls decided that they would put the music up to the maximum and turn it into a party so it did.
Oh wow, Macy just proved why she’s the queen of the world. She just said ”We’re gonna have to turn the music down ’cause we can’t hear ya!”. (Crowd cheers some mo’). That woman’s pretty awesome, I must say. ”Now it’s your turn to introduce yourself! On the crowd of three, all the sexy people in crowd will yell out their names. Only the sexy people now, com’on, 1… 2… 3….” (crowd yells names) ”nice to meet you!” and into another song.
Anyways, Tessa then joined me for Miracle Fortress. The stage had been invaded by a bunch of the wooden figures that had been hidden in the woods throughout the festival. To anyone present, you’ve been given the OK by the artists to steal any of the artwork and bring it home with you. I doubt there’s any left right now because I keep seeing people walking around with huge wooden people under their arm.
My camera is low on batteries right now, so I’m going to try and save the bit left to get a few shots of the bands I’m about to go see and I’ll post them up tomorrow. Deal? Theres still a whole lot of Osheaga action left despite the fact that it is so cloudy right now that it almost look like the sun is setting. Which is might, I really should be keeping track of time. Off I go to Besnard Lakes!
