Okay, so things you should know: this video is actually a stop-motion wonder made up of 7′300 digital still images all shot by *safe solvent this winter. He created this amazing page for the video complete with short making-of video clips and amazing extra features, like a downloadable version for your cell phone or iPhone. Will wonders never cease?

The whole video making experience was super fun (though occasionally mind-numbingly cold> outdoor wintertime shoots!) and *safe is an amazing, dedicated friend who pulled his sister Catherine in to help and asked his partner Lara if we borrow some key costume elements from her tickle trunk of a wardrobe, among many other things. *safe solvent and I have collaborated for years, but this was the first time we worked on a video together, so I asked him a coupla questions in a recent IM chat…

Nightwood: What do you find magical about the wintertime?

*safe solvent: the motion. definitely the fact that for the most part, people stay in. you can almost get the equivalent of a large scale film’s “blocking off” of a city block, without even trying. I’d have to say the isolation it creates.

Nightwood: What do you like about collaborating on music videos?

* safe solvent: Definitely the symbiotic relationship that forms between band and videographer/director. you can’t have one without the other. actually, that’s not true… but i like the idea of trying to get the visuals to reflect the ideas or tone that the band originally set out to create. the fact that you get to have the drummer crouching in a small space drumming on pots and pans pretending he is sitting in a small hole in a tree with complete faith that you won’t make him look stupid, is a level of collaborative trust you rarely get …
