Cheap Thrills was Montreal’s first used record shop and the first Canadian record store to sell via the web. This year is their 37th year in business so it seems like about time to celebrate. Stop by La Sala Rossa on May 3rd for their anniversary party with performances by Clues, Torngat, and Anemones.
Tickets are available at the door with proceeds going toward sustaining Cheap Thrills and making a donation to a local charity.
CHEAP THRILLS 35th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
Cheap Thrills is proud to celebrate its 35th year of existence (in its 37th year with a charitable concert and fundraiser Saturday, May 3, 2008 at La Sala Rossa.
Though it’s technically our 37th anniversary (we meant to celebrate our 35th because it’s a good number but just didn’t get around to it). Really, more than a fundraiser or promotional event, this concert are more of a “thank you” to our customers, who have been loyal and supportive always, but especially in the last ten years when it seems the record industry was eating itself alive. So any “Cheap Thrills” party is really a celebration of our customers, who’ve sustained us for 35 years and whom we hope we have served as warmly and diligently as possible.
A brief history
*Cheap Thrills opened Montreal’s first used record store on Bishop Street in 1971.
* The Bishop store closed in 2000 all the Cheap Thrills and operations were moved to Melcalfe where they continue in a gnarled brownstone, the only building left of the street that isn’t a big pink skyscraper. Presently-in addition to our mainstay of used books and records-we offer a large selection of new vinyl, indicative of the shifting trends of the music industry.
*In 1994 Cheap Thrills became the first record store in Canada to sell on the web.
Over the years have offered an eclectic yet expansive selection of jazz, r’n'b/soul, pop/rock, reggae, retro, folk, hiphop, avant garde and a large and varied world music section as well as the latest indie hotness, to both our Montreal and mail order customers. Recently we have expanded our noise, retro and electronica sections (”beats,” “electronic experiementalism,” “quiet improv”) and added a black metal section. Our vinyl LP section, though already extensive, is growing ever larger as well. As always, we accept albums on consignment and have a large local section. We hope to continue serving all our clients’ interests well into the future.
The show
Local groups Clues (Alden Penner ex-Unicorns), Torngat (Alien8 recording artists) and Anemones (recent openers for The Silver Mt. Zion and Destroyer) will perform. Tunes spun by DJ Cheapie.
Tickets will be available only at the door. They will be cheap and a portion of the evening’s proceeds will go to a charity of our choosing.
