ok, so our web hosting provider has recently taken steps to begin reducing their carbon dioxide emissions.
it may not seem like that big a deal, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction.

Some of you out there might be wondering to yourselves:
Well, how much energy can running websites possibly consume?

To get a better idea of the impact that one large web hosting company can have on the environment, here’s a quote from our current provider:

“When we learned that running DreamHost generated as much carbon dioxide as 545 average-size homes we realized we had to do something.”

The steps they’ve taken:

1. They’ve purchased enough Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) which have been certified by Green-e to account for their energy usage.
2. They’ve also purchased carbon credits from The Gold Standard. These credits come directly from reductions that meet standards established by the Kyoto Protocol and offset emissions from projects that would otherwise not exist.
