Ever been given sheet music and been told to use it to write a script? A strange request. But that’s the challenge we’re posing in Indyish’s latest project, The Assembly Film/Music Relay.
Alone or as a team you will be given a common starting point, the original sheet music for a song by a local musician. Your challenge is to write a 10 minute film script using at least five lyrical or thematic elements from the song.
Each script will follow its own path into the hands of a team of filmmakers to be filmed and edited. The final lap is run by musicians, including Graham Van Pelt of Think About Life and Miracle Fortress, Tyler Rauman of Telefauna, and Conor Prendergast of Brave Radar, who will each take one of the films and create an original soundtrack for it.
As the project moves forward, passing from hand to hand, teams will make notes in a group script using the collaborative writing program, Celtx. Certain creative decisions, such as dialogue changes and location information, will only be added in at specific stages of the films’ development while others will change many times with each new team. Celtx will allow you to have a keen sense of the intentions of the artists’ whose work you are building upon. It maintains every version of the project, creating a unique document of creative transformation throughout The Assembly.
The final films will be screened at Friendship Cove on Saturday, March 10th with a live soundtrack by the musicians involved.
Tracing written music into words, words into images, and images into audio, The Assembly is a collaborative assembly-line style project designed to stretch the scope of your work and inspire new connections.
The batons are handed out on February 10th with a week for each stage of the project.
Space is limited and will be determined by the number of applicants at each stage. Sign up must be completed by February 7th at which point the final teams will be announced.
You will receive the sheet music Saturday, February 10th and have until Friday, February 16th to complete your script.
