Call for Writers Abroad and Beyond

by Risa Dickens

This is an official call for international Indyish contributorsand you can contribute more then you might think!

Indie as an idea is big. And Indyish, given its suggestion of collectivity, its reliance on volunteers of all kinds, its intentional blurring of the boundaries of indie, its desire to connect, is at least potentially biggish. It’s bigger then we can cover on our own, for sure! We need you YOU you.

It’s obviously bigger then just what’s happening here in Montreal. Though here is interesting and awesome, we are starting to twitch and crave more - more insight from beyond, more indie communities being considered, more indie collaborations around the world unpacked. To be able to triangulate what we’re learning here, we need insight into scenes and projects elsewhere. In Toronto, Winnipeg (yes!), Truro (sure!), Philadelphia, Rome, Auckland… wherever you are, there is an indie, diy spirit somewhere there and we’d love you to help us find it. And poke at it.

We’re also interested (this is the ‘ISH’) in things that are not quite indie but still work; systems that feed and support independence. And of course, on the flip side, we welcome considered and critical perspective on industry and the mainstream. We’re mostly interested in art (widely defined) but if you think the experience of indie cab drivers in Azerbaijan (or pig farmers in the US) has something to teach us then by all means, our ears and pages are open to you.

Contributors can be writers, podcasters or video bloggers.

Indyish is a powerful site that, in one short year, has networked with hundreds of independent artists, produced lots of events including two international art relays, daily happenings for the Montreal Fringe, monthly variety shows, two 24 hour music video contests and one 24 hour design challenge, and we now attract almost one million hits per month to our site. We are a volunteer-driven organization, and the strength of our network depends on the energy put in by every Indyish artist, writer and volunteer.
