Call for Silk Screen Designs

by alanah

This call for silkscreen design submissions dropped into my inbox over the weekend from an old friend, Katie Green. Katie made the bold, indie move of re-investing her tuition money in a silkscreening studio. Now she’s callin’ for artists to collaborate with on a new line of clothing:

Hey all,

I am working on putting together a design show in March in Montreal at my studio space. I currently have my own screen printing business/shop that I started on a whim last May. A project that I have been wanting to execute since I began this venture is one of a clothing design label that is a collaboration of the works of the wonderful artists that I know.

This is how I imagine it…

My goal is to create a line of clothing that is inspired by artistic creativity and unconventionality. I am going to mingle what we know as Art and Craft through taking original artworks of various mediums and combining them with the functionality and accessibility of clothing or wearable products. I will do so by adopting and manipulating various artworks into layers to be printed onto some form of textile.

I would like to create an opportunity for those artists working in a variety of mediums to express themselves through textile printing.

I would like to collect a variety of artworks, photo’s and/or scans of previously made or newly made artwork that people think could be suitable for textile printing (potentially with basic manipulation to the work to make it textile printable). This can include line drawings, regular drawings, paintings, blockprints, photographs, photoshop/illustrator design etc.

Because of my shop/material limitations every design can only be 4 colours or less, but multiple designs can be layered if need be.

I am open to the amount of involvement that one person may want to have. If you have some artwork (photo’s/scans/jpg/pdf files) on hand that you would just like to send to me and allow me to manipulate at my own free will you are more than welcome to do that.

Also if there are any people who may have one or two designs that they have always thought would look super rad on a shirt/textile but have never had the means to have it printed, this is a chance to do so.
All designs will have to be approved and meet the objective of this project, but why not just submit and try!

I will ultimately figure out a way to compensate the artist for their work (license it from them), this is what I am in the process of doing right now. But at the show these designs will be sold in limited runs, so the artist will be compensated with a percentage of the sales. I will also be crediting all of the artists on a tag that comes attached to the item which if the artist wishes can also have contact info on it.

I want to execute this project as somewhat of a marketing tool for the artists as well. This is a good chance to get your name and what you do out into the various artistic communities in Montreal and potentially beyond.

This is just the first phase among many that I am working on, but if this makes any sense to you, and you would like to participate, please send me a message or an e-mail at:

green.l.katie at gmail dot com (and yes that middle letter is an “L”)

and I will provide you with even more info or answer any questions that you may have!

Cheers,

Katie
