Think you can create the soundtrack for a short film? Indyish’s latest film and music project, The Assembly, is a new brand of artistic relay race that challenges you to do just that.
Writing teams will be given a common starting point: original sheet music by a local music group. Their challenge is to write a 10 minute film script using at least five lyrical or thematic elements from the song. Each script will follow its own path into the hands of a team of filmmakers to be filmed and edited.
It’s your job to take one of the films and write the music. Musicians signed up to take part include Graham Van Pelt of Think About Life and Miracle Fortress, Tyler Rauman of Telefauna, and Conor Prendergast of Brave Radar.
Experience with recording and production or a friend with these skills will be helpful as your track must be recorded and synched to the film. All instruments and musical styles are welcomed. You are in no way limited by the film you are working with and have a huge creative outlet for experimentation.
Tracing written music into words, words into images, and images into audio, The Assembly is a collaborative assembly-line style project designed to stretch the scope of your work and inspire new connections.
As the project moves forward, passing from hand to hand, teams will make notes in a group script using the collaborative writing program, Celtx. Celtx will allow you to have a keen sense of the intentions of the writers and filmmakers whose work you are building upon. It maintains every version of the project, creating a unique document of creative transformation throughout The Assembly.
The final films will be screened at Friendship Cove on Saturday, March 10th when you will have the chance to perform your soundtrack piece live.
The batons are handed out to scriptwriters on February 10th with a week for each stage of the project.
Space is limited and will be determined by the number of applicants at each stage. Sign up must be completed by February 7th at which point the final teams will be announced.
You will receive your film Saturday, February 24th and have until Friday, March 2nd to create your soundtrack.
Things you must do:
-Use Celtx to make notes as you work with the film and create sounds for it. This can be an extremely helpful tool, allowing you to mark places where your sounds will go directly onto the script.
-Record your soundtrack and place it onto the Indyish ftp server (you can also use the server to collaborate with friends during the project)
-Play your soundtrack piece at the screening along to the film.
-Be willing to have your work in The Assembly published on the Indyish blog as well as on a dvd documenting the project.
