Call for Community Developers- Art, Clothing, Music, Lit.

by Risa Dickens

Indyish is growing, and though the world seems dark and dismal too often these days, the work of supporting independent artists makes us at team Indyish feel glad to be alive. We are looking for 4 people to help us. No one makes money off of Indyish, so don’t expect to get paid, at least not for awhile, but if you’re that special combo of artist/ social networker/ geek that we seek then I think there’s a lot of fun to be had. We’d certainly be excited and delighted to have your brain on board. If you see yourself in any of the following descriptions then send a letter, cv, and samples of past work (a writing sample and anything else you have) to team@ indyish.com.

There are 4 major positions we’d like to fill, all of them called “community developer”, one for each of the four main categories on the site- Music, Clothing, Lit and Art. These community developers will take up the unique combination of web work, creative cross pollination, and real world event management that we think makes Indyish special. Each area of arts has unique challenges, and each one deserves somebody passionate about it and dedicated to providing a voice for it with Indyish.

In general, these 4 community developers must:

-Attend weekly meetings with team indyish to brainstorm and touchbase and otherstuff.
- Be a good conduit for communication between artists in your field and indyish, helping out especially with new artists.
- Blog for indyish.com/blog
- Manage the aspects of indyish events that fall under your domain.

Community developer- Music

The music position is really important- this is the area on Indyish that, we think, has the most untapped potential.

We’re looking for someone passionate about music to help us find great artists to support on indyish and to develop the ways in which we can provide that support. If you are excited about Indyish and what we can do for musicians, and are interested in helping us make good on that potential; if you have an inner geek that you think will be capable of communicating coherently on the subject of blogging and online distribution to musicians and the people they work with; if you want to be a part of producing and promoting shows with us that are unique because of some extra performative or collaborative twist- we really really really want to hear from you.

Community developer- Clothing and Fashion.

This position involves blogging, event organization, and much communication with designers. Designers seem to do really complicated and time consuming work- they have been the most enthusiastic early-Indyish adopters, but sometimes they need help getting their goods photographed and online. We’re looking for someone who can connect with the amazing clothing artists who are involved in Indyish and keep figuring out ways to make Indyish good for them. Another major feature of this position is finding sites that might be interested in the work we have for sale and letting them know about it.

Community Developer- Art.

Are you a filmmaker or video artist? Maybe you run a gallery or something? Maybe you’re student, how the heck do I know. All I know is, we’d like to find one person to devote themselves to supporting the visual art world on behalf of Indyish. This position probably has the widest field to cover- film, performance art, photography, sculpture, graffiti etc. Your tasks will involve seeking out great artists who want to be involved, managing screenings, organizing comic jams and other collaborative art happenings, coordinating group shows, building relationships with venues and art supply sponsors and much more.

Community Developer- Lit.

Do you know zine writers, book authors, indie publishers in Montreal? Do you want to help support and promote that community with readings and online events and all else Indyish can provide? Do you have ideas for ways the written word can be drawn, in exciting ways, into Indyish events? Want to be a voice for lit at Indyish? This job’s for you.

All of these positions, though unique, require self motivation, excitement about indyish – what it is and what it could be- a writing voice, at least some experience with event organization, and at least some knowledge of the web. But seriously- self-motivation is most key. We’re looking for people who really want to get something out of this experience for their own reasons. It’s an independence thing, and we’re all about that.
