[Update: Our host for the evening will be the beautiful wordsmith, Miss Gina, and Moly Kulte will be gracing us with a new unique creation!]
For the past 12 months (12! Already! crikes) we have traveled the city, bringing heaps of art into new spaces with the carnival-esque fundraiser/showcase the Monthly Mess. With 5 -15 acts featured each month, often in unconventional and collaborative conjunctions provoked by the Indyish team of producers and curators, the Mess has spawned exponential collaborations in it’s wake.
“What started out with a blog and online boutique featuring a loose affiliation of indie “folks who make stuff” has evolved into a well-oiled monthly event that revels in breaking down artistic boundaries.”
Natasha Aimee Hall, The Montreal Gazette.
To celebrate 1 year of Mess makin’ Indyish invited it’s members and allies to think about Dress as a theme - fancy dress, eco dress, and more. On Feb 29, expect insight into indie fashion, recycling and environment from LaGaillarde, and maybe Moly Kulte as the girls jump into the action straight back from a Euro trip, and dress advice from the crowd and community, coordinated by Worn Fashion Journal.
Music-wise the night will feature The Darling Demaes, Brave Radar and Nightwood.
All can be expected to bring something special to the Mess:
Stars of the first ever Mess, a truly messy mess, the Darling Demaes fresh off a tour of Quebec and Ontario which set college radios a’buzz, will give the Mess crowd a sneak preview of their brand new music video for A Couple of Schizophrenics (with a whole other perspective on dress ;):
“Breezy, plucky guitars layered with male-female harmonies shroud the restrained urgency of lyrics written by Montreal-based band The Darling DeMaes. (…) Relying mostly on vocal harmony and guitars, the DeMaes pepper their sound with the glockenspiel, mandolin and melodica, creating a sound likened to Belle and Sebastian, The Shins or Paul Simon.”
Rafay Agha, Toronto Medium.
Nightwood goes Unplugged for 1 night only.
Nightwood is a love affair made for three, a sonically sweet terse perversion, usually a single-minded and uncompromising rock trio, making a special exception to titillate the Dress Mess. Check out Big City EP, their first mini-album release coming out on Grenadine Records in May 2008.
And Fixture buddies (go T!) Brave Radar:
“Montreal’s buzzing scene can always be trusted for springing pleasant surprises on us, which is exactly what boy/girl duo Brave Radar have done with this debut. (…) the twosome go from bouncy pop to quirky folk to distorted Yo La Tengo-type ditties ensconced in a snug lo-fi buzz without breaking a sweat.”
Pras Rajagopalan, Exclaim!
After the presentations (8-9) and performances (9:30-11) we’ll just party, celebrate the mess in our dress, and dance to the mix provided by Worn’s old time goodies DJ, TED K!
