Broken Telephones: Chapter 1

by sarah pearson

Dear Trace,

I’m emailing you a mere few minutes after you’ve left the hostel. Paris is already feeling greyer, lonelier without you - even though you’re probably still just walking towards the metro station. Soon you’ll be on the RER, on route to Charles de Gaules. You’ll line up at whatever-the-heck airline gets you home (Canadian Air it’s called? Canada Air??? Beats me:-) ) and begin your long journey back to Montreal. The sun will set here, and with it will come the usual melancholy that befalls me on cold lonely nights. Lucky for me I’m still in Paris, the perfect place to be romantically melancholy. I’ll likely hit the town with the crew from Sydney and drown my misery in sangria, maybe even try to forget you. But i know i won’t. And that’s why I’m emailing you now, to tell you that. I won’t forget you.

Hehe, on that note, Sam (the bushier-looking aussie) is calling me over for a pint. I’ve been living the hostel life for seven months now, and with each day I can’t decide if this lifestyle is getting old for me, or if it’s one I never want to escape. I do know this: I’ve met a lot of people these seven months, a helluva lot of people, and from all over the world. I’ve been in eight different countries and three time zones. And you know, because I told you, how many people I’ve slept with since being on the road. All this to say - of all my adventures these past seven months, I’d rank meeting you as the most unforgettable of them all.

So travel safe, my dear. Remember me if you’d like, or not. Wonderful things await you as you begin to reintegrate into your routine back home. If in the midst of it all, you make time to remember the poor fool from LA who fell in love with you that one night in paris, I will feel blessed. Take comfort knowing that I will be thinking of you.

And so, you’re probably on the RER by now. Not long before Charles de Gaules…you’ll be boarding your flight before sunset and will continue to fly into the sun. I will take comfort knowing that wherever you are tonight, there is sunshine.

Love
Dexter
