I’m heading down to Austin, Texas after the Assembly to play South by Southwest with my buddie Conor Prendergast. He’s been making music as Brave Radar since he lived in Australia and he played Pop Montreal this past year. He got booked to play sxsw and asked me to help turn his solo show into a two-piece to fill out some of the sounds from the recordings.
We’ve been practicing together for the past two months and in that time I’ve picked up the drums and some random percussion instruments. For sxsw, Conor’s playing guitar, kickbox, and singing and I’m playing bass and drums and we’ve got some noise recordings to mess around with.
We got the line up last week for our show on March 17th and it looks like mainly girl groups. There are some really talented female singers and a bit of shoegazy goodness, which I guess is sort of what we play. With Conor singing…
Check out some of the bands we’ll be playing with:

I feel a bit strange playing a big festival having barely ever played a show in my life, and really not being that good at my instruments, but there are a million other shows going on each night, and it’s gonna be a great opportunity to see some bands and do the festival thing.
Sucks because Conor’s booked as a solo act so I don’t have a pass….but I intend to work my way around that and get some solid coverage for indyish. Most of the coverage will probably take the form of photos from outside venues and writeups on shows I missed, mixed with overheard quotes pieced together from people I know who get into the shows.
A whole pile of Montrealers are heading down to play sxsw and since Conor and I are boarding at someone’s house, I have plans to crash the hotel room of Miracle Fortress, which apparently will have a jacuzzi.
ahh also- el and i will watching from behind rocks, hoping you find some good uber geeks from sxsw interactive to network with.. ps- everyone be nice to Tessa- she’s practicing for sxsw this week while managing the 7 part assembly screening and hopefully helping pull off an added liederwolfe opera element.. and by “pull off” i mean “score the thing completely and teach it to the singers” yeah. hopefully sxsw will be relaxing ..
