Check out the music video for the latest song Kyaan Done from the good peeps of Plajia. Directed by Adam Owens, released 25 January 2010 with Patrick Pleau on vocals and back vocals, guitars, organ; Simon Boivin on bass; Paco Laviolette on drums; and Jocelyn Poitras on electric guitar. Recorded by Nicolas Petrowsky @ Mixart Studios (Montreal, Canada). Oh yeah, and I also embedded a video of theirs from last year, because it’s quite lovely and well worth spending a little more time with on a terrible cold day (or any day, but I gotta tell you, it’s terrible cold here today!)

Zohar Kfir contacted Indyish recently and what a pleasure it’s been to investigate her video art. Not least among the work featured on her website is a found footage piece called Sometime Somewhere. There is a way to work with found footage and sound that is revelatory and nostalgic and contemporary all at once, and I think it requires a really strong editting eye to keep layering textures on, and pulling clutter out. Anyway, check out these video pieces, see if you see what I mean, and hopefully we’ll showcase Zohar’s work soon at an upcoming Mess.

Hello everyone!

Happy New Year! I am writing because I have a friend who perhaps you have heard me mention before- her name is Liliany Obando and she is a Columbian human rights worker who has been detained in the Bogota women’s jail for the past year and a bit. I have copied what my sister wrote about her below, as well as links to information about her. Even if you happen to be in Mexico or the States or another province in Canada I wanted to let you know about her and if you happen to be in town, to invite you to something fun. We have organized and will be performing at a special awareness/fundraising event, along with some surprise guests and a few eloquent speakers on Jan.9th at the Tranzac. I just discovered there was an article published about her on the front page of the Toronto Star as well- the beauty about living in a place like Canada is you don’t get imprisoned for speaking your mind or murdered for your beliefs. Here’s to a woman of unimaginable bravery. Please come to support this cause.

Hello All,

I found out that my friend Liliany Obando was in jail in Bogota via
email last September. My immediate reaction was a combination of
helplessness and relief. Helplessness because the Colombian government
was labelling her a terrorist and relief because she was still alive –
unlike so many of her friends.

I met Liliany in the summer of 2006. We were both on tours for very
different reasons. I was with my swashbuckling collective/band Uber
Hussy. While Liliany, armed with a translator and documentary videos,
was on a human rights tour discussing the plight of farmers in
Colombia and the corruption of its Colombian government. We were all
travelling from Toronto, Ontario, to St. John’s, Newfoundland, so
naturally — we carpooled.

These are some things I know about Liliany: she loves her country; she
is disheartened by the actions of her government; she is a single
mother of 2 and she is an excellent dancer.

About the same time that I heard about Liliany’s incarceration, I
discovered I was pregnant. If you know me, you would concur that such
a thing would be a huge life change for this particular brand of Uber
Hussy… and believe me it is. Perhaps this is the reason it has taken
me so long to organise anything on her behalf – Perhaps I had secretly
hoped she would be let out of prison after a fair trial. Needless to
say, the fair trial hasn’t happened yet and the event is about to.

On January 9, 2010, you are cordially invited to attend a very special
evening at The Tranzac in Toronto (292 Brunswick Ave). This is a
benefit for the children of Liliany Obando aged 5 and 16. It is also a
reunion of sorts for the Uber Hussy crew – if you would like to learn
more about Uber Hussy, please click on the links below. I have also
included a link to a website created for Liliany and a song written
about Liliany by Michelle Rumball and Roger Langen.

I hope to see many of you on the 9th. If you are unable to be there in
person, and would like to show your support, please mail your donation
payable to District 12 OSSTF (attention: District 12 Human Rights
Committee). The mailing address is: 1482 Bathurst St., 3rd Floor,
Toronto ON M5P 3H1. Any help spreading the word about the cause is
accepted with gratitude.

Regards,
