This debut feature from Montreal’s Kidnapper comedy troupe has been called “the real thing…a truly funny movie” by John Anderson at VARIETY and “the funniest comedy of the year” by Matt Hayes at the MONTREAL MIRROR.

SYNOPSIS:

“Who is KK Downey?” is the story of two perennial losers who want more than anything to be famous and popular. The only thing is, Terrance’s indie band sucks and Theo can’t get “Truck Stop Hustler,” his touching book about a young male prostitute, published anywhere. Things change however, when they decide to print Theo’s book under the name of its fictional protagonist: KK Downey. The book becomes a sensation, with over privileged twenty-somethings wanting to desperately identify with the tragic figure. Canada, HD, colour, 87minutes.

Photos and Review – Think About Life and Ghetto Nuns

The nice thing about seeing a Think About Life show (and sometimes the grating thing, depending on your mood) is their unbridled enthusiasm. No matter what, they’re going to sing themselves hoarse, jump into the audience, swing a mic stand, and thank everyone and tell them they love them and are truly happy to see them out at the show. This, of course, was the case at Lambi on Wednesday night, however there was a nice counterbalance to their boundless positivity in the form of the dark and terrifying sounds of Ghetto Nuns. As a teenage devotee to all things Al Jorgensen, and more specifically his side project with Jello Biafra called Lard, I was thrilled to hear a band cranking up their drum machines to the terror setting, and blasting the audience with a wave of horrifying sound. If you’re ever in the mood for a really devastating bad trip (and if we’re going to be completely honest with each other, who isn’t at some point in their lives) no band is better suited to the task then the Ghetto Nuns.

The group has produced over 20 short films playing at a diverse range of festivals (Just for Laughs, Austin, New York International Film Festival, Sarasota) as well as performing live at The Drake in Toronto, Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in New York and The Comedy Central venue in Los Angeles.

The crown jewel of any hardcore Kidnapper fan, this one short film alone went so wildly over-budget it’s now listed in Guiness as ‘the most expensive film ever produced solely through begging, crying and borrowing’. Watch out James Cameron, once Pat Kiely steps behind a camera, it’s gonna make your reckless budget breaking look more like a conservative old Jew not ordering the Table D’hote. Shot on glorious 35mm motion picture film. 18 minutes.

In early 2003 Kidnapper Films was commissioned to produce one short film to accompany a local band’s CD launch, seven months later they had not only reduced the band to an eight minute set in what was now known as “The Kidnapper Variety Show,” they also refused to pay them. See that performance alongside some short films-”The 45 year old Pot Dealer,” “Mr. Montgomery and Homeless Boy,” as well as a special celebrity guest! 1 hour 11 minutes plus Outtakes!
