Assembly 2.0 Writing Starts Today!

by Tessa Smith

Indyish Assembly 2.0 started this morning with scriptwriters from around the world being added to the project “Indyish Assembly Start” on Celtx.

Indyish created one project with the starting materials, made enough copies for the number of participants, and shared each copy with one writer by uploading it to the Celtx server and adding a writer’s username in the uploading options.

Writers can now download their project from the Celtx server and read the full rules and notes on getting started. Here is what was included in the project notes:

Hi and welcome to the Indyish Assembly 2.0!! You’re about to be part of an international collaborative arts relay that brings together writers, illustrators, theatre directors, actors, musicians, and animators. Woo!

Please read through these rules and notes before starting.

You can reach the Project Director at any time at:
Tessa@ indyish.com or by private message on the Celtx forum

Celtx How-Tos are available at the Celtx Wiki Manual:

You can also post questions on the Assembly 2.0 Forums:

Posting your questions on the forums in the appropriate topic can be helpful for other participants. We also encourage you to use the forums to describe your experience during the Project, and we’ll be linking to the forums from the Indyish blog.

“The music God listens to on His walkman” is the piece written specifically for this project by playwright, TJ Dawe. The Script tab is where you can begin writing your own piece.

To start, make a copy of this project (File>Copy project). As you work on your script, save it to your harddrive (Save). In order for your script to be eligible to be passed on to directors, actors, illustrators, animators, and bands, you must upload your final version to Celtx Project Central by midnight May 31st (Pacific time) named in the format “Indyish Assembly2-Title”.

Your work in The Assembly is licensed Creative Commons Attribution 2.5, allowing us all (other participants, Indyish, Celtx, you) to distribute, broadcast, share, even sell parts of it, so long as proper credit is given to the makers.

You must use at least 5 elements from TJ Dawe’s piece in your script. This means picking a person, a paragraph or a line you like, or selecting a setting, an object, or an image to carry over into your story.

Scripts can be any length, though preference will be given to shorter pieces for the show. Aim for 10 minutes.

At the beginning of your script, please include a paragraph with the following information:
-a short bio
-which 5 elements did you choose? (and why, if you’d like)
-suggestions to improve the Assembly
-comments about using Celtx
-contact info (for mailing Projectbook)

All scripts written and uploaded to Project Central in time will be published in the Assembly 2.0 Projectbook.

Scripts will be chosen to be produced during the Fringe Festival of Montreal depending on the number of completed scripts and the number of director/actor and gifmaker teams, as well scripts’ feasibility given the 48 hour time limit for their staging. To increase your script’s chance of being produced during the Fringe, keep in mind the nature of the relay (bands will be writing music to accompany the plays, directors and actors are using their own resources to produce the plays, pieces will be performed alongside other writers’ plays). But we also hope to challenge our directors to use the scripts in creative ways to make them work. Your script may also be more suited to being made into an animation after being illustrated. The animations will have soundtracks just as the plays and will be screened at the performance.

If you’re interested in doing another stage of the project, please fill out the signup form, indicating in the notes section that you’re also writing a script.
