I went down to the 5th Summit of Cinema of Animation at the Cinémathèque Québécoise. I was sort of expecting the attendees to be youngish guys uber into computer graphics. This was not the case. There were people of all ages just into animation. The short films cut a swath through my conception of what animation today still is. I had incorrectly assumed that the summit would be overwhelmed by computer generated 3D graphics, it did have some of this, but it also contained films having animation done with paint on glass as well as seemingly good old pen and ink. The subject matter stretched from a more dark Kafka short story inspired film called ‘L’homme Qui Attendait’ to more humorous films about the everyday life in ‘Ici Par Ici’. That was what I most appreciated in this summit, the wide array of styles and the fact that serious matters such as the Holocaust in ‘Les Oreilles N’ont Pas de Paupières’, with its riveting sound editing and harsh cuts to sterile text in bright white background, could be juxtaposed with other witty, smart and whimsically funny films. This summit is only around for one more night. TONIGHT! December 2nd. There are two different sets of films, the first starts at 7pm and the second at 9pm. About 1/3 of the films are in English 1/3 are in French and 1/3 have no dialogue but what is language when the stories are so readily accessible through the narrative of the animation. I think you will be pleased with what the summit has to offer and if nothing else let it broaden your horizons.
