Press Release

The Assembly Film and Music Relay and Screening
Relay: February 10-March 9, 2007
Screening: March 10, 2007. Friendship Cove
Montreal, QC.

Following quick-like on the success of December’s Holla-Days Party and Music Video Making with Pop Montreal, Indyish.com will be producing a brand new film- and music-making event March 10th at Friendship Cove. This latest project, The Assembly, is a non-competitive, assembly-line style of collaborative art making (hence the name). The Assembly will produce a series of 10 minute short films with original soundtracks as ideas are passed from writers to directors to musicians throughout the month of February.

The Assembly kicks off on February 10th with a week for each step of its development. Writing teams will be given a common starting point, the original sheet music for a music piece by a local artist. Their challenge is to write a 10 minute film script using at least five lyrical or thematic elements from the song. Each script will follow its own path into the hands of a team of filmmakers who will shoot and edit it. The final lap is run by musicians, including Graham Van Pelt of Think About Life and Miracle Fortress, Tyler Rauman of Telefauna, and Conor Prendergast of Brave Radar, who will each take one of the films and create an original soundtrack.

As the project moves forward, passing from hand to hand, teams will make notes in a group script using the collaborative writing program, Celtx. Certain creative decisions, such as dialogue changes and location information, will only be added in at specific stages of the films’ development while others will change many times with each new team. Celtx will allow participants to have a keen sense of the intentions of the artists’ whose work they are building upon. It maintains every version of the project, creating a unique document of creative transformation throughout The Assembly.

Here’s how it breaks down:
