Indyish began as an idea in Risa and Elran’s heads. When they met there was a bang and a flash of lights and they promptly fell in love and got to work.
…
In December 2005 Risa came up with the name Indyish to describe a balance between “captain of your own ship” and “member of a mutually beneficial network.” Elran dug it so he worked like a madman to build the site based on suggestions from the artists and the founders’ own dream schemes.
…
In August 2006 Indyish launched with much art making, rock music and fanfare.
We’re a loose affiliation of folks who make stuff.
Today Indyish is still based in Montreal, still run and developed by El and Risa, with an awesome evolving Team, sexy volunteers, and over 300 groups of indie artists who are members of the site. Together we co-author an indie arts group blog, sell our indie wares and produce Indyish events like the MonthlyMess.
Indyish membership has grown slowly and carefully, with invites and applications as the only way in (for now…) Over time and with good will and hard work, the website is getting better, and the network effects are building up between us. The Indyish are helping each other find work, get gigs, find their customers, get inspired, and keep our chins up along the bumpy road of independence. Indyish.com takes the smallest possible percentage from artists sales (2%) and seeks business partners, sponsors and advertisers who meet environmental and ethical standards so the network on every level can remain sustainable.
Our mission is to pool audiences, voices, and the market for indie goods. We know we’ll be stronger together. Artists who make use of the systems and connections here will make friends and maybe even make a living doing something they love. We hope Indyish will become one good hub in a new, healthy arts ecosystem.
