6 months without the internet- A (not so) Epic Story

by Marilis Cardinal

I am currently blogging, live from my bedroom. I just refrained from using a lot of exclamation points, but the deal is, I haven’t had the internet since July, when I moved here, out of lack of money and time to get it connected. I’m going to go straight up and say it, I’m impressed with myself. I’d say I’m probably one of those internet-obsessed people, I blog on here and run a street-style website and I feel slightly itchy and mainly just uncomfortable when I haven’t checked my emails in a few days. Point is, the World Wide Web is available to me once more, woah! The internet man woke me from a light anxious slumber at 8:30 and did his thing while I sat in the kitchen pretending to be cool about his presence while I read Exclaim in my nightgown, awkward…

So while this story is most likely very unexciting to you, here’s what happened moments after he came out into the hallway to say the magic words: ”it works!”. Basically it’s just a library of links I like and you might too, who knows!

First things first, my homepage was still set to The Sartorialist, so I spent a few minutes catching up on the beautiful, inspiring street style photos from Milan, Paris and New York.

An important step-number 2 when rediscovering the magic of the internet, is a little visit on the Hype Machine to refresh my very very outdated playlist and get some new podcasts.

-A good one is the preview podcast from the adorable and slightly awkward boys (with nice exotic accents) and gal of Fixture Recordings who will be doing a launch party and showcase on Febuary 14th at Cagibi. Listen HERE!

-After a little over a month’s absence, Andrew Rose returns, this time with 2 ”Top 10′’s of 2007’s best songs, part A focussing on Montreal and Canada with songs by Sister Suvi, Magic Weapon and Plants and Animals (amongst others), whereas part B presents the best of non-Canadian content. Get ready for a pretty entertaining conversation about the ecological aspects of rubber balls and a tribute to Charles the cat. Listen here.

-Another good podcast that I discovered through her Flickr account, is Nilina Mason-Campbell’s Not On The Guestlist. It’s more of a photo blog of shows around Portland accompanied by some sweet tunes, but some of her older Podcasts get some definite air-play on my ipod and at work.

-And just because podcasts are FUN, here’s a good one from Fader.

While some people’s ”pĂȘchĂ© mignon” is Perez Hilton, I like to browse the pages of our brand new BLOG BFF, Hipster Runoff. It’s run by the very sweet Carles and written as a cross between mockery and worshiping of the hipster/nu rave community. Very guilty entertainment.

And finally, I also browsed Midnight Poutine who have a new feature coming up about Montreal blogs! Got to love those!!

I believe that’s about all the fun things I’ve experienced in my reunion with the internet. Stay tuned for a ”best of street-style blogs” soon! Yay!

I’ve challenged Tessa to an internet-off; a challenge to see who can go the longest with out going on the internet. But…it’s not till summer. Because a winter without internet would be like a metaphor without a subject.
