500+ Photos of a Graffiti Landmark before it goes down – Washington Packing Cannery

by Risa Dickens

Every city has these, buildings emptied out long ago and stuck for decades in bureaucratic limbo, claimed by countless people who are happy to make use of them. Seems like these would be good starting points for community run spaces, art galleries and safe sleeps and more, non? In honour of the kids who left their life’s work in them?

Instead, in San Francisco, they are preparing to tear another old one down.

The photos in this set are from 2005 – 2008.

The Washington Packing Cannery was shut down in the 60’s after people died from botulism after eating the tuna they packed here.

This was also one of the last places in San Francisco that you could find stuff by the late King TIE.

RIP.

This spot like many others, will be destroyed and gone for ever. San Francisco has lost another landmark.
