2007 Montreal Celtic Music Sessions Festival, June 17 to 23

by Risa Dickens

This from Elizabeth Johnston:

Sessions: a group of amateur musicians, with often a few professionals in the mix, who gather in a public house to play traditional Irish music once a week. These sessions go on at a different venues around Montreal (and have done for decades now) and are part of a long Celtic tradition. This festival introduces you to the session leaders, players, speakers and a host of other amazing people. It’s a full week of sessions, talks, workshops, and a special Summer Solstice Soiree on the 21st of June.

* Storyteller Mike Burns will be there as will be
* Jean Duval, Steve Jones, Martina Branaghan, Fred Graham, Genie-award winner Chris Crilly, Order of Canada Member Marianna O’Gallagher — all giving talks (and some playing music, too),
* Plus, Pierre Minn will teach an original dance choreographed especially for the solstice,
* award-winning playwright Colleen Curran will perform a solstice piece,
* raffle for a total of $350 in raffle prizes
* UK Champion Uilleann piper, whistle & flute player, Steafan Hannigan will be giving classes in Uilleann piping, whistle and bodhran.
* UK Fiddle champion Saskia Tomkins will be giving a fiddle class.
* Session Animation led by Belfast Andi, Peter Senn and Marilyn Aitken, Director of SIAMSA, and
* an opening and closing dinner

I hope to see you all at the festival. If you like playing Irish music, bring your instruments, or just join in on one of the events. I’ll be at the Indyish Street Fest, if you want to find out more about the events, the people and the tradition, as well as get tickets.

Slainte! (that’s ‘cheers’ in Gaelic)
